  • Listening to World Affairs this morning. It’s on the Philippines and Duterte. The interviewee,  Richard Heydarian, says that Duterte and Trump are more immune from attack on moral grounds because they did not present as honorable. For me, this means that there is a different relationship between trust and awareness among his followers. The presentation of ‘rough edges’ gives an impression of authenticity, and raises trust, while making awareness more complicated.
  • How did the news go ‘fake’? When the media went social
    • Social media force us to live our lives in public, positioned centre-stage in our very own daily performances. Erving Goffman, the American sociologist, articulated the idea of “life as theatre” in his 1956 book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, and while the book was published more than half a century ago, the concept is even more relevant today.
